the timbit queen

wow, back from 2 beatiful weeks in canada. the weather was fantastic, seriously. the first few days were perfect weather, then it got scorching hot, then it just got beautiful again with only a day or so of rain and overcast. i have so many pictures to sort thru, it might be weeks before i get them all up and viewable. alex had a lot of fun, too much to even go over, some of the pictures will just have to speak for themselves. so i'll just gloss over a few key components to alex's enjoyment. first off, the most important thing that alex said that she liked best about vacation was the beach and playing in the sand. every day she wanted to go out there first thing, before the sun would even hit the beach so she could make sand castles, sand cakes, and most importantly collect rocks. yes, alex has a rock collection. in fact, one of my favorite quotes from holiday is alex telling me what collections she has now: "i have a rock collection, a money collection, and a shoe collection"!! remember, she's 3. and by the last few days alex had amassed a few rocks (minus the ones secretly snuck out of her stash to add to the rebuilt causeway) that she built a rock pyramid, which she is so happily unveiling in the picture here. on the first weekend of our trip, uncle matt bought some fireworks for fourth of july (and it had been canada day too, of course) and we had brought some sparklers. alex was not scared of the sparklers at all, she held them herself and wanted more. she enjoyed the fireworks too, it was quite a show - thanks uncle matt. on fridays, rosseau has a fair with craft booths and food and such. alex brought her camera with her this year because she wanted to take pictures of dogs. it was really quite funny, she would go up to a dog owner and ask to pet their dog and then ask if she could take a picture of their dog. keep in mind it's a kids camera so the picture quality is not so good, but they're hilarious pictures - i'll have to post those too. she is still getting the hang of aiming her camera at the shot she wants, so mostly they are close up dog faces or just fur. then, the next day at the orrville fair (ok, fair is a generous word, there's usually about 4 booths and one of those is a food booth - of course, the canada day fair in orrville was bigger, complete with the steel drum band, northern lights) alex got to use a pottery wheel with miss katherine and made herself a bowl. this woman makes incredible pottery and is so nice on saturdays to help kids make pottery for free! oh, and i need to mention that alex "paid" for her pottery time with her own money - it was a nickel, i believe (alex also "paid" for lunch that day with the dime she had left). alex's bowl will be glazed blue and she should get it in about a month - she's very excited. alex was not afraid to tell us that she does not like bugs! she actually does, it's just hard to like them when they're mostly mosquitos and flies that are biting you. but when we told her that the dragonflies eat the mosquitos then they became her best friend - she was always looking for them and getting excited and would whisper "hi" to them before she scared them off. she enjoyed seeing the toads, frogs and "eagles" aka seagulls too. alex caught her first fish this trip! in fact, she caught 3 fish total, i believe. john put a real hook on her dora fishing rod and she caught rock bass - there's some cute pictures of her posing with her first fish (and she made me take a picture of just the fish). she really enjoyed fishing too, it didn't last very long each time, but she wanted to go almost daily. sooo much more, but on to the food of the trip (alex is a great eater usually so food is always something to talk about)! well, the trip started out with alex announcing her dislike of "bopey and normy-norm's canada snacks", but that was my fault for giving her red grapes (instead of green) and cheddar cheese (instead of american). as usual alex was a fan of the peas. the farmer only had peas for us a couple of times, but alex shelled them and ate them up - we really need to find peas here that are that big and delicious. she finally tried a wild blueberry - this after days of making normy-norm pick blueberries with her and then refusing to actually eat any - she loved it and then ate every blueberry she found after (of course, she had already picked most of them). alex discovered her love of salami ("some lami") - shocker there, she loves any meat that comes from a pig. she loved it so much we had to restrict how many pieces she could eat each day. and finally...tim horton's timbits! wow, she can plow thru a container of those, and who can blame her, they're good. she liked the glazed ones until she discovered chocolate and it was all over from there. all she would eat were chocolate timbits after that (big surprise, the chocolate fan that she is). i think one day she set her record with eating 10 timbits in one day!!! (i know - peas, salami, and chocolate donuts - don't judge me based on what i let my kid eat on vacation.)
