the Gladiator Games
alex had her first taekwondo tournament this weekend. we had no idea what to expect. she signed up for 5 events; 2 main events and 3 side/fun events. the place was packed (it really would have been nice if we were in a bigger gym.) alex wasn't nervous at all, she was ready to have fun. first she performed her form; she got three gold flags which earned her an invite to the championship round of forms. then she went to do the side events; power breaking (bronze), fast kicking (silver), and jumping front kick (warrior). she got medals for all her side events. she then performed her form again in the championship round; she did great, but a higher belt won the best in intermediate level of forms. she got a trophy for her forms. then last of sparring. it was set up as two 1 minute rounds. when it was finally her turn they had to pause to have a big discussion because the boy she was sparring didn't have padded gloves so he'd be hitting her bare knuckled! they let him fight and just told him not to punch her face! after their two rounds they were tied so they went into a third round of tie breaker (even though i thought she clearly won because she was pushing him back with her punches the entire time.) and she told the win in the tie breaker round. her trophy for sparring was a wooden gladiator sword. alex had a great time and loves all her winnings. then on sunday, we went to a monsters hockey game. they beat chicago 1-0. we had great seats and we all had fun - alex saw that they sell ice-cream at the games and wants me to remind her next game, haha.
