life is better at the lake
we just got back from our two week holiday to the cabin. i'm back at work, but alex and john still have a couple of weeks left to sleep in. before i talk about vacation time, alex said a fun thing before we left. i just didn't want to forget this, she's so cute and thinks thru everything - and has more questions than that. she had asked me what "gay" meant; and i told her it's when girls like girls and boys like boys. so then, hours later, when we're laying in bed relaxing before bedtime she says to me, "um, i think i might be gay." haha, no worries, she's allowed to be as gay as she wants and we'll love her for it, but it's been clear since she was a toddler that she's not gay. so i ask her, "do you feel the same way about sophie (her bff) as you do about dawson (her future husband - according to her.) and she replies with, "well, no, because i really want to kiss dawson!" haha, i said, "then, sweetie, you're not gay." it was so cute and sweet - and it is difficult for her to understand that she's not gay when she does like girls. now, vacation! we got to the cabin on a Friday evening. the next day was a Canada Day festival in Orrville - okay, that means maybe 25 people - although it was getting more popular as the day went on. Alex immediately waited in line to make her pottery piece with Kathryn like she does every year (this was her fourth piece.) as she's finishing up making her bowl, a photographer comes up to me and asks if it's okay if he takes her picture for the North Star paper (the local paper that prints once a week.) haha, we're probably the only non-Canadians at this Canada Day festival and Alex gets a large photo in the local paper - she thinks she's famous now. the weather started out rather cold and rainy, but it improved and we got some nice beach days scattered in there. alex helped with her cousin, Carter, a lot - she loves having him around. uncle matt offered to pay alex a dollar a day to babysit! although we had to pay up uncle matt's tab a time or two. towards the end of vacation, alex took her canadian babysitting money into trader's post and bought Crazy Freda (a stuffed red fox.) and funny, on our drive home from vacay (at about 4am) we saw a red fox laying in the road that scurried off as we drove up. john caught a lot of large fish this vacation: he's particularly proud of the 7 pound large mouth bass he caught on one of the last days we were there. alex caught a couple of large fish, but did not land them. i actually went fishing as well, but only caught a small bass. uncle matt caught alex a very large leopard frog for Alex that she kept all of vacation and finally let go on the last day. we went on the boat and the paddle boat. we went into rosseau both fridays for their festival - the donut lady isn't there this year though, but bopey found her at the tuesday market, so now we know where to look next year. alex picked blueberries and found rocks and did very well swimming in the water. we crafted and read and the boys did lots of work like chopping trees and fixing roofs and such. sarah and i even managed to fit in some fitness while on vacation: alex joined in as well until she'd get bored and move on to something else. ooh, and while in the back woods of canada i was able to schedule all our dining reservations for disney, including the breakfast at cinderella's royal table on alex's birthday! all in all, it was a lovely vacation and now back to reality.
